Summary

The majority of high-voltage transmission systems (HVTSs) in service today are high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) systems that rely on many of the same technologies that existed at their conception over 100 years ago. In order to detect many system problems, phase angles must be compared at each end of a transmission line simultaneously before high-speed disturbances can be seen. These measurements can only be obtained with a new generation of technologies that enable synchrophasor and wide area situational awareness (SWASA) solutions. As current and planned transmission networks and substations are being modernized and SWASA solutions are beginning to be deployed, transmission substations are becoming digitally enabled. The next generation of SWASA solutions are part technologies, such as the phasor measurement units (PMUs) and phasor data concentrators (PDCs) needed to collect and aggregate massive amounts of data, and part new IT applications and systems that collect, manage, analyze, alert, and automate rapid response to network frequency and phase angle synchronization. Communications systems and back-office analytics will thus need to be replaced with next-generation systems that can support and provide the analytics and visualization tools necessary to better provide transmission network reliability and resiliency. According to Navigant Research, global annual transmission synchrophasor revenue is expected to grow from $8.5 billion in 2014 to $16.7 billion in 2023. This Navigant Research report analyzes the global market for the eight underlying technologies that are the primary components of SWASA solutions. The study provides an analysis of the market drivers and barriers and regional trends associated with synchrophasors and wide area situational awareness. Global market forecasts for revenue and installations, segmented by technology and region, extend through 2023. The report also examines the key technologies related to SWASA solutions, as well as the competitive landscape, and provides case studies of SWASA projects.
